Doppelbock- the Lenten beer
Doppelbock, a strong slightly sour spring beer created by seventeenth century Roman Catholic Minim friars is designed for liquid fasting during lent. They created this strong malty beverage, dense enough to be considered a nutritious meal during fasting.
The oldest and most storied doppelbock is Paulaner’s ‘Salvator’, Latin for ‘savior’. Salvator is still brewed in the same location today it was created over 300 years ago. In honor of ol’ Salvator many Doppelbocks end with with “or,” such as Troeg’s “Troegnator” and tonight’s “Celebrator”.
So here’s to you Catholic Jesus!
